Directors around Watford and Hertfordshire
Watford has long been a place where companies set up. Several firms have head offices here, and a number of large international groups run their UK operations from the town. Around them sits a busy layer of small companies run by one or two directors, many working from the office buildings on Clarendon Road, about 500 metres from Watford Junction, or from Croxley Park off Hatters Lane, close to the M25 and M1.
Plenty of directors live in Bushey, Rickmansworth or Kings Langley and run their company from home. Wherever you work, the questions we hear are much the same. How much can I take out? Is my loan account a problem? What happens to the tax if we grow?
Salary, dividends and how you pay yourself
Most owner directors take a modest salary plus dividends. For 2026/27, employee National Insurance starts at £12,570 a year and employer National Insurance at £5,000 a year, at 15%. The Employment Allowance can cover up to £10,500 of employer National Insurance, but not if a director is the only paid employee. Those rules shape the best salary for your company, so it is not the same answer for everyone.
Dividends come out of profit after corporation tax. Above the £500 dividend allowance they are taxed at 10.75%, 35.75% or 39.35%, depending on your tax band. A company can only pay a dividend out of its accumulated, realised profits. Paying dividends the company cannot cover creates a problem for you as a director, so we check the reserves before each one is declared.
We also look at the timing. A dividend declared just before 5/4 falls into one tax year, and one declared just after falls into the next. Spreading payments across two tax years can keep more of your income inside the basic rate band.

The director's loan account
Your director's loan account records money you take from the company that is not salary, dividends or repaid expenses. It also records money you put in. When you owe the company money, the account is overdrawn.
If you owe more than £10,000 at any point in the year, the loan is usually treated as a benefit in kind and must be reported. If the loan is still unpaid 9 months after the company's year end, the company pays a temporary extra corporation tax charge on the balance. It can reclaim that charge once the loan is repaid, written off or released, but not the interest. You must also report the loan on your own self assessment return.
Keeping an eye on that balance is a big part of what accountants for limited companies in Watford do. We check it through the year so you can clear it with a dividend or a repayment before the charge bites.
Pensions and family members
Pension contributions paid by your company are usually an allowable cost, which reduces its corporation tax. HMRC accepts them as part of your pay as long as your total package is reasonable for the work you do. That makes company pension payments a common way for directors to take value out without paying dividend tax now.
Paying a husband, wife or adult child through the company is fine when they genuinely work in the business and the pay matches the work. HMRC can refuse the deduction where it does not. We help you set a level you can explain if HMRC ever asks.
Accountants for limited companies in Watford planning for growth
Corporation tax is 19% on profits up to £50,000 and 25% on profits over £250,000, with marginal relief in between. Those limits are shared between associated companies, so opening a second company for a new idea can push both into a higher rate. We look at that before you register anything.
Companies can claim full expensing on most new plant and machinery, which deducts the whole cost from profit in the year of purchase. Firms doing real research and development may claim relief under the merged scheme for periods starting on or after 1/4/2024. If sales pass £90,000 in a rolling 12 months, VAT registration follows. Our role is to see these points coming a few months early, not to report them after the year end.
Keeping on the right side of Companies House
Every director and person with significant control now needs to verify their identity with Companies House. A confirmation statement is due at least once every 12 months. Annual accounts must reach Companies House within 9 months of the year end, and late filing penalties double if you are late two years running.
We handle these filings as part of your year end work, so your time goes into the business rather than the forms.

Common questions
What salary should a director take in 2026/27?
It depends on whether your company can claim the Employment Allowance and on your other income. Many directors set salary around the National Insurance thresholds and top up with dividends. We work out the best level for your company each year rather than using a stock figure.
Can I take dividends every month?
Yes, as long as the company has enough accumulated profit to cover each one and the paperwork is done properly. Monthly dividends can help your personal cash flow. Taking money with no paperwork usually ends up in your director's loan account instead.
What happens if my director's loan account is overdrawn at the year end?
If it is still unpaid 9 months after the year end, the company pays a temporary extra corporation tax charge. It gets that back once the loan is repaid. A loan over £10,000 at any time in the year is usually also a benefit in kind.
Do I need to verify my identity with Companies House as a director?
Yes. Identity verification is now compulsory for directors and people with significant control. You can do it through GOV.UK One Login or through an authorised agent.
Can my company pay into my pension?
Yes. Company contributions are usually a deductible cost for corporation tax and are not taxed as dividends. They count towards your pension annual allowance, so we check that before large payments.
Should I open a second company for a new business idea?
Sometimes, but associated companies share the corporation tax limits, so two companies can pay more tax than one. We compare a second company with running the new idea inside your existing one.
Can you help if my company has outgrown its old accountant?
Yes. Many directors in Watford and St Albans move to us when the company starts hiring, registers for VAT or needs regular figures to make decisions. We take over your HMRC and Companies House authorisations and contact your old accountant for the handover. Switching to accountants for limited companies in Watford does not mean waiting for your year end.
