Harrow town centre, from the station to St Ann's Road
Modern Harrow grew up around Harrow on the Hill station, at the foot of the hill where Harrow School was founded in 1572. The station has Metropolitan line and Chiltern Railways trains, with links to the West End, the City and out to Aylesbury. The town centre is named as a metropolitan centre in the London Plan, which puts it among the most important shopping and business areas in outer London.
St Ann's Road was pedestrianised in the 1980s. The St Anns Shopping Centre opened opposite the station in 1987, followed by St George's Shopping and Leisure Centre, with its cinema, in 1996. Station Road carries more shops north towards Wealdstone. Harrow is the main town in the London Borough of Harrow, which also covers Pinner and Stanmore.
Accountants for Harrow shops and family businesses
Away from the chain stores in the shopping centres, plenty of smaller Harrow businesses are family run. A shop, takeaway or service business with a few staff has to juggle stock, card takings, cash, wages and VAT, often while the owner is also serving customers. Good bookkeeping takes that weight off. We set up cloud software, reconcile the bank each month and keep a running eye on the VAT threshold, which is £90,000 of taxable turnover in any rolling 12 months.
Employing relatives is common in family firms, and it needs to be done properly. Wages must be real pay for real work, run through payroll and reported to HMRC. Employer National Insurance is 15% above the threshold in 2026/27, and the Employment Allowance of up to £10,500 can reduce that for many small employers.

Landlords and property in HA1 to HA3
A Harrow landlord might let a single flat, while another family might have built up several houses over the years. Rental profit is taxed at your normal rates, and you need to tell HMRC once rental income passes £1,000. Since 6/4/2026, landlords whose combined property and self employed income is over £50,000 have had to keep digital records under Making Tax Digital, with the threshold falling to £30,000 from 6/4/2027.
Some families ask whether to hold property in a limited company instead. The answer depends on borrowing, plans for the next generation and how much income you need to draw. We set out the figures both ways. When a property is sold, capital gains tax on UK homes must be reported and paid within 60 days of completion.
Hospital staff and professionals
Northwick Park Hospital is on the edge of Harrow, near the University of Westminster campus. Doctors and nurses on NHS payroll sometimes have locum shifts, private work or rental income as well, and that usually means a self assessment return by 31/1. Payments on account, two advance payments on 31/1 and 31/7, can come as a shock in the first year, so we plan for them early.
Other professionals in the borough work as consultants or contractors through their own company. Corporation tax is 19% on profits up to £50,000 and 25% above £250,000, with marginal relief between. We help directors balance salary and dividends, keeping in mind that the dividend allowance is now £500.

It is natural to assume that accountants in Harrow need to be on St Ann's Road itself. In practice most of the work happens by upload, email and video, so the real test is how quickly questions are answered and whether deadlines are flagged early. We cover Harrow, Stanmore and the towns over the border in Hertfordshire on the same fixed fee basis.

Common questions
Do you have an office in Harrow?
No. Our accountants are based in Watford. Harrow clients usually work with us online by email and video, and meetings can be arranged when needed.
Can I pay my husband or wife from the business?
Yes, if they genuinely work in the business and the pay is reasonable for what they do. It must go through payroll and be reported to HMRC. We set this up properly so it stands up if HMRC asks.
I let two flats in Harrow. When do I need a tax return?
You need to tell HMRC once rental income is over £1,000. HMRC asks for self assessment where profit after expenses is above £2,500, or rent before expenses is above £10,000. With two flats, you will very likely need to file.
Should I put my rental properties into a limited company?
There is no single answer. Moving existing properties can trigger tax and mortgage costs, so it needs careful figures. We compare both routes before you decide.
I work at Northwick Park and do extra locum shifts. Is that taxed already?
Shifts paid through payroll are taxed at source. Self employed locum or private income is not, so it needs to go on a self assessment return by 31/1.
Can I switch to you partway through the year?
Yes. With your permission we contact your previous accountant for the records we need, and we pick up from where they left off. Nothing has to wait for the year end.
What are your fees?
We do not publish prices. After a free review of what you need, we agree a fixed fee in writing before any work starts.
