A royal village on the River Gade
Kings Langley sits in the Gade valley, about two miles north of Watford and two miles south of Hemel Hempstead. Its name means Langley of the King. Eleanor of Castile took the manor in the 1270s, a royal palace grew up on what is now Langley Hill, and Richard II was buried in the priory church in 1401 before his remains were moved to Westminster Abbey.
The village is unusual in being split between two councils. The River Gade runs through it, and the larger western side is in Dacorum while the smaller eastern side is in Three Rivers. Kings Langley Parish Council, set up in 1894, adds local services on top of Dacorum Borough Council and Hertfordshire County Council. For a business, which side of the river you are on decides who sends the business rates bill.
Accountants in Kings Langley for Home Park businesses
The Home Park Industrial Estate, near the station, holds a good number of the village's businesses. If your firm runs from a unit there, with staff, vans, stock and trade customers, the work that matters most from your accountants in Kings Langley is usually payroll, VAT and the year end.
Employer National Insurance is 15% above the secondary threshold, and many employers can reduce their bill with the Employment Allowance of up to £10,500. Construction firms may also need to run the Construction Industry Scheme, deducting 20% or 30% from subcontractor labour and filing a monthly return by the 19th. Corporation tax is 19% on profits up to £50,000 and 25% above £250,000, with marginal relief in between. Buying new plant and machinery can bring capital allowances, which we claim for you.

The High Street and the old Ovaltine works
When the A41 was moved onto a bypass west of the village, the High Street was left to local traffic for the first time in centuries. The old road is now the A4251. If you run a shop, pub or cafe along it, you need simple, reliable bookkeeping and someone keeping an eye on the £90,000 VAT threshold.
The building most visitors notice is the old Ovaltine factory beside the railway, with its listed facade from around 1923. The factory itself has been turned into flats. Renewable Energy Systems now works from the former Ovaltine Egg Farm, next to a wind turbine nicknamed Lofty. It is a good example of how older industrial buildings here have found new uses.
Commuters on the West Coast Main Line
Kings Langley station is on the West Coast Main Line, with regular London Northwestern Railway trains to Euston and Milton Keynes. The M25 crosses the Gade valley on a viaduct just south of the village, with junction 20 meeting the A41 nearby, so the motorway is close at hand as well.
If you live in WD4 and earn a salary through PAYE, your tax questions probably come from what sits alongside it. A buy to let flat, a share of a family business, investment income or a side business can all mean a self assessment return. Higher earners with children also face the High Income Child Benefit Charge once income passes £60,000.
Landlords and flat owners in WD4
You may own one of the Ovaltine flats or a house in the village and let it out rather than live in it. Rental profit has to be reported once gross rent is above the £1,000 property allowance. Mortgage interest on a home you let gives a basic rate tax credit rather than a full deduction.
Making Tax Digital for income tax applies from 6/4/2026 if your gross rent plus any self employed income is over £50,000, from 6/4/2027 if it is over £30,000, and from 6/4/2028 if it is over £20,000. When you sell, capital gains tax on a UK home must be reported and paid within 60 days of completion.

Common questions
Do you have an office in Kings Langley?
No. Our accountants are based in Watford and work with Kings Langley clients online and by email. Meetings are arranged when they are needed.
Is Kings Langley in Dacorum or Three Rivers?
Both. The River Gade splits the village, with the larger western part in Dacorum and the smaller eastern part in Three Rivers. Your address decides which council handles your business rates.
Our company on Home Park has just taken on staff. What do we need to do?
You need to register as an employer with HMRC before the first payday, run payroll reporting each time you pay staff, and set up a workplace pension for eligible workers. We can take care of the payroll and pension duties for you.
Can my company claim the full cost of a new van?
Vans and most plant and machinery qualify for capital allowances, and companies can often claim the full cost of new plant and machinery in the year of purchase. The exact treatment depends on what you buy and how it is used, so we check each item.
I commute to London and let out a flat in the village. Do I need a tax return?
If the gross rent is above £1,000 a year, you need to tell HMRC, and in most cases that means a self assessment return. We combine your salary and rental figures on one return.
When is corporation tax due for a Kings Langley company?
Corporation tax is due nine months and one day after the end of your accounting period. The company tax return must be filed within 12 months, and the accounts go to Companies House within nine months of the year end.
What does an accountant in Kings Langley cost?
We agree a fixed fee with you after a free review of your needs. Nothing starts until you have agreed it in writing.
